westmoreland service corps

Special Notice:

For nearly 40 years, the Westmoreland Service Corps (WSC) has offered five young adults an opportunity for year-long meaningful service, simple living and spiritual growth in intentional community.

However, after careful consideration and deliberation, we have ceased recruitment to create space for examination and re-visioning. During this time, we encourage anyone interested in service opportunities to contact the following local agencies directly.

The Westmoreland Service Corps is a year-long domestic service program sponsored by Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ, a few steps from Washington, DC, in Bethesda, Maryland. All persons, regardless of faith, are welcome to participate. The Westmoreland Volunteer Corps started in 1985 and has a history of changing lives of those who volunteer and those who benefit from their involvement.

The Service Corps offers five adults - typically recent college graduates - the opportunity to work in direct social service and social justice advocacy through placements with Washington-area organizations and service agencies. Each year, the Service Corps identifies positions with organizations and agencies in Washington, DC, and suburban Maryland and Virginia. The social service agencies provide services such as employment counseling to incarcerated individuals, case workers for at-risk youth, maternal/child health care and other health programs, social and legal services and shelters for the homeless, and refugee support.  Advocacy opportunities include community organizing in low-income communities and social justice issue organizing.  The goals of the participating agencies are matched with the interests, skills, academic training, and career goals of the five interns. The positions at the agencies provide opportunities for interns to explore possible career paths in advocacy, social service, health care, law, housing, religion, education, and international aid, among others.
