Convene and Opening
We convened in the church library at 8:30 a.m. For
the opening, Bunty read a prayer and meditation titled "Among the
Multitudes."
Review of Draft Minutes of
March, 2008 Meeting
The March 9, 2008 minutes were reviewed and
approved.
Volunteer Recruiting
We went through the summary sheets for the
applicants. John reported that the first three applicants have
completed their interviews and have chosen Bread for the City as their
first choice. John will talk to Bread to see who their first choice is.
We need a potluck host for Rachel, who goes to school at American
University.
We discussed whether we should invite other
applicants to interview. Various factors were discussed including
group/personal dynamics among those living in the house.
Christ House has two applicants it cannot place
whose names they will give to us. Those applicants are interested in
medical positions, rather than case management jobs.
Future applicants may be interested in
environmental or pre-law positions, and we should attempt to find
agencies that have such positions.
Community Counselor's Report
Linda reported (via Will) that she is coordinating
meetings with the volunteers to help them figure out what they want to
do next year. The four women volunteers are looking for a house
together.
Americorps Report
Garrett reported that the security/background
checks need to be completed for this year. Applicants should be told
that they need to have a background investigation before they will be
hired by an agency. CNVS is under pressure from Americorps to submit
exit information.
House Report
Glenn reported that things are fine right now with
the volunteer house. The t.v. was replaced and the computer service is
back.
Chair's Report
Will raised the question whether the board would
prefer that Jessica Peterson's work as community counselor be done as a
member of the staff of the church or separately as an independent
contractor. The consensus was to hire Jessica for this position as an
independent contractor, if possible. Will will follow up with the
arrangements.
Will reported that Mary Schaller Blaufuss had
asked if we could make a video of talking with the volunteers about
their experience in the Westmoreland Volunteer Corps, i.e., service
with their agencies, living together in community, and their
reflections in general, in order to have a medium for prospective
applicants to view daily life as a volunteer on You Tube. The consensus
was this seemed like a promising idea; Will will talk with the
volunteers about their reactions and interest.
Will mentioned that we will evaluate the program
for the year at the June 20-22 retreat. Departing board members will
transfer their duties to the new members at the retreat as well.
In July, there will be a final party at the
volunteer house. The house must be cleaned the last week of August. We
will welcome the new volunteers Labor Day weekend.
We adjourned about 10:00 a.m.
