Church
Life
Westmoreland
Congregational United Church of Christ is a
lively, busy, active church with programs for every generation. Sunday
worship,
church school, and post-worship coffee hour are at the core of our
common life
— the place and time where weekly we come together as a community to
express
our faith in God and each other.
Our community is enriched
by our many groups and shared
experiences. We have a Middle East committee engaged in active work for
peace
and youth groups that come together in service and fun. We have Bible
study
groups, book clubs, choirs open to all who would like to sing, and a
spiritual
yoga class that caters to both body and mind. We have members who make
casseroles and sandwiches to feed the local hungry or read to
underachieving
students in city schools. Some of our members teach English as a second
language to newcomers from other countries.
We have a “green” group that helps us connect
our faith with our
responsibility to the Earth and we have a lively arts community that
benefits
from our relationship with the Washington Music Conservatory. We also
are proud
of our Volunteer Corp, the group of young adults that we support with
housing
and household expenses while they work with non-profit agencies in our
metropolitan area.
Our membership enjoys all
kinds of social gatherings, among
them happy hours for young professionals, potluck dinners for parents
of
children of all ages, luncheons for members in their prime-time and a
yearly
spiritual and social retreat where we get away together for the weekend.
We also come together
several times a year in church-wide
fellowship. Each September we have a luncheon on the lawn after church,
each
fall we work together on a fund-raising bazaar, and we celebrate
Thanksgiving
together on the Sunday before the holiday with a big turkey dinner. And
just
when winter may be making us feel desolate, we have a Valentine’s
Sunday brunch
to lift our collective spirit.
Last but not least, our
community cares for one another in
times of need. We pray for each other and our extended families every
Sunday
during worship. We also take worship services to those who are
homebound and
send letters and phone calls their way to let them know they are not
forgotten.
We have developed Community Cares – a volunteer-run network to help
each other
in times of crisis, such as death or illness, or chaotic joy, such as
when a
baby is born.
